Hoisin Sauce is a common ingredient in many Chinese American Dishes like Moo Shoo Pork and Peking Duck, and it is well loved by many people for it’s tangy, slightly fermented taste. Most commercial versions have wheat flour, so we’ve created one that you can make simply and quickly (and relatively cheaply!)
6 tablespoons dark brown sugar
3 tablespoons black beans, mashed into paste
1 tsp garlic paste
2 tablespoons white vinegar
3 tablespoon water
2 tablespoons gluten free soy sauce or tamari
2 tablespoon honey
4 teaspoons gluten free rice vinegar
1/2-1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder (please check to ensure it’s gluten free!), depending on taste
1/2 teaspoon sesame paste (tahini)
1/4 teaspoon Sriracha or Chinese Red Pepper and Garlic sauce
2 Tbsp (about 1 oz or 28.3 g) Better Batter Gluten Free Flour
In a small saucepan, whisk together all ingredients, starting with 1/2tsp of chinese 5 spice powder. Taste and adjust 5 spice powder to adjust taste. Heat over medium heat, whisking constantly, until mixture thickens. Cool and store in fridge for up to 3 months.
